    Class of 2025

Dear BEHS 12th Grade Students & Families,

Welcome to your SENIOR year of high school!  By now, after a couple of years, you probably know me, but if you are new or have forgotten, my name is Khabir Edwards, I am one of the school counselors on the BEHS Student Services Team, and I am so excited to work with you for what is likely your final year at BEHS!

    Pause & Reflect

I imagine you are nervous, excited, full of tons of mixed emotions about what will come in June and beyond, and for most of you, probably ready to be done with high school.  This is a time of incredible growth, opportunity, beginnings, and endings.  I encourage you, students and parents/guardians alike, to breathe through this year.  There will undoubtedly be moments of worry, anticipation, celebration, and relief.  Although senior year is packed with to-do list items, it is also an important year to reflect.  Moments, experiences, and feelings pass us by, and without pausing to express our gratitude, recognize lessons learned, or acknowledge what we’re feeling, we may feel fuzzy by the end of the year and wonder how time passed so quickly.  If you can, take a second to regularly inhale, identify what you’re feeling, exhale, and stay present.  “Life moves pretty fast.  If you don’t stop and look around in a while, you could miss it,” as Ferris Bueller once said.

    Thank You & Reach Out

In your final year of high school, I look forward to continue supporting you with your career and college readiness, your social-emotional needs, and your academic planning and success.  You can always email me or book an appointment with me to discuss anything related to these topics.

    More Help - Ms. Beaulieu

An additional person on our Student Services Team, who will be a tremendous asset to you as you embark on applications for college, trade school, the military, or the workforce, is Ms. Morgan Beaulieu.  Her role at BEHS is Career and College Placement, Ms. Beaulieu can be reached at mbeaulieu@bonnyeagle.org, or you can book an appointment with her at any time for post-secondary questions and concerns.  Her office is also located in the Student Services suite, where my office is as well.  Ms. Beaulieu and I will be working together closely this year to ensure all seniors have a clear post-secondary plan.  Although I love supporting each of you and deeply want to be the one to help you, there are a lot of you (261 of you, to be exact!), and I can’t prepare you all alone.  Please know that Ms. Beaulieu is an amazing person who will treat you with the care and concern about your future.  You are welcome to work with her at any point!

    Next Steps

I am getting many emails and questions from students and families about navigating the process of either applying to college, joining the military, how to find scholarships, Early College courses, and more.  These are all great questions!  I appreciate your patience as I move through my emails and responses as quickly as possible in the midst of the start of the school year.  More information about all of these processes will be forthcoming in a variety of formats:

    • Senior SYNC classes - please show up to this class every week and pay attention to all info distributed in SYNC, including info about your Senior Capstone Project)
    • Email - I will disseminate information as frequently as I can via email to both students and parents/guardians, primarily through mass email in Synergy.  Please check your inboxes regularly!
    • Our Student Services website - see the link & QR code below!  There is a wealth of information on our site, but check out the Careers and College sections specifically.
    • Daily morning announcements on the intercom, especially for College and/or Military Rep Visits.
    • Our monthly department newsletter - I hope to continue sending that out every month and will include important information for seniors when I have it.

    New This Year: Levels

As a way to better manage students’ requests to see a school counselor or social worker, our department is implementing a new system to identify the level of need for any given student.  Students and teachers should be utilizing this flowchart (which will be posted around school) to determine the level of the student’s need without going into detail about the specific concern.  We have created a list with examples of concerns to help with determining the level (also will be posted around school).  The student or teacher will take specific actions, as listed on the flowchart, depending on the level of need.  The numbers advance by the level of urgency:

    • Level 1: Important need, but I could ask someone else or solve on my own
    • Level 2: Important, need to talk, but I can wait 2-3 days
    • Level 3: Urgent, and I need to be seen by the end of the day
    • Level 4: Emergency, and I need to be seen immediately

Why this helps: This leveling system allows all staff members and students a better way for communicating about a student’s needs without revealing confidential or unnecessary details.  This also helps to manage our flow of appointments to ensure we are prioritizing students with the most urgent needs.  Finally, this system supports students in developing their self-evaluation skills.  Before rushing to get help, they must ask themselves, “What kind of problem is this?  Can I solve this on my own?  Do I need help?  From whom?  How urgently do I need help?”  This is not intended to prevent students from getting help; instead, it should help them better evaluate whether they have the skills to support themselves, who is the best person to help them, and whether they can manage or cope until help can be provided.  If you have any questions about this system, please send me an email.  Since this is new, it will take time for common language to develop among all staff and students, and we appreciate your patience as we navigate this new process.

    My 2023-24 goals:

    1. Support: ensure every student in the Class of 2024 is prepared to leave high school with a post-secondary plan in place

(NOTE: I will always continue to support students’ social-emotional development, but the majority of my work will shift this year to support students’ graduation plans and college and career readiness).

    1. Advocacy: continue to advocate for more equitable school policies and practices that remove barriers and ensure the success of all students in the MSAD 6 district

(NOTE: Some of you may know that I helped train our entire district staff last year on topics related to identity, implicit bias, and microaggressions.  I hope to continue this work as much as I can this year to ensure our staff are well-trained to serve our diverse student body and families in our community).

    1. Culture-Building: help to build a school/community culture of inclusivity, respect, positivity, support, and pride, and lean on our school’s new leveling system to emphasize the importance of mental health that includes use of coping skills and a common district language that addresses these topics

I look forward to working with you to ensure your best possible experience at BEHS!  Let’s make it an incredible senior year!

    Sincerely,

    Pal Covie, M.S.
